Mmm. It's not good when you're trying to cut sugar and rhubarb comes into season...
I made two different but similar rhubarb things last year, and don't remember what they were called. Crisp, crumble, cobbler? Pie-like things that don't need to look all neat like a real pie, I guess. I preferred the first one I made that was tarter, and Davey seemed to like it too, but my husband has more of a sweet tooth, I guess. They were both really yummy though. Rhubarb, the vegetable that even mediocre bakers can make wonderful pie with. That slogan needs a bit of work.
D's mom: I think you made a crisp. Did it involve cutting oatmeal and butter together? That's a crisp. Adding some strawberries might cut the tart enough for the Honk-daddy without making your crisp too sickly-sweet.
Ah, our Summa friends... Perhaps you'll have the good fortune to travel to someplace like Minnesota and enjoy a slice of homemade rhubarb pie. Then you'll understand.
I do seriously wonder if it's too warm in the South to grow good rhubarb.
