Hello Peony,
I am enjoying your ‘reports’ on P&P. We LOOOOOOOVE Jane Austen at our house and have recently finished re-reading P&P (much to the chagrin of my sons! LOL)
Are you interested in other Austen books? Have you seen any of the movies based on the books? My favorite of all the P&P renditions (and I think I’ve seen them all) is the A&E/BBC series. I can’t stand the Lawrence Olivier one!! And while the BBC (only) rendition was VERY much like the book, it was poorly produced and acted and it took a lot away from the story.
Also, I’d like to know your thinking on using Austen books for pre-teen/early teenage children. Considering her topics usually involve some scandal, I have reservations (but not enough to keep my children totally away from the books, kwim?) They are well written and Ms. Austen does treat the subject matter discreetly. However, I still worry about having young children exposed to this stuff.
Hi there! Thanks for the kind words.
I like Austen very much, though I have nothing near the levels of erudition that many of her other readers possess. I don’t know Northanger Abbey that well, nor the juvenilia, but I’ve read the other major novels. Emma is my favorite. I have seen many of the recent movies — in fact, it was my screed on the recent adaptation of Mansfield Park that sparked the Group Read. I haven’t seen the Oliver/ Garson PP, and I don’t want to — it looks like a train wreck. My favorites of the recent films would probably be Persuasion (starring Amanda Root), with the A&E/BBC P&P a close second.
As for pre-teens, I suppose it would depend on the pre-teen, but I think might be the perfect age to introduce them. After all, they’re getting curious about love and courtship — what better time to teach them about using their heads in love as well as their hearts?
I know there is at least one pre-teen out there who says she is participating in the group read, but she has not posted a single comment yet. I am quite put out! (a side note, if I may — I hope to see her contribution soon, we are eager to hear from her. I hope I won’t have to send her to the cellar with a coffee grinder and a sack of seed wheat. Please forgive me this inside joke.)
Once at the library I saw a young lady who looked about ten or so — she was looking for a particular volume of the PP video. The librarian said, no, we don’t have that volume in, only this one, but that will put you out of order. The young lady giggled and said that would be fine — she’d seen them all dozens of times anyway….
Oh, I love Persuasion also. I own the Amanda Root video. I rented it from the video store at one time and loved it so much, I asked for it for my birthday!
I do hope that the pre-teen reader posts sometime. I am most interested in her views, since my children do not comment too much.
