Darn!

We had a gully-washer of a thunderstorm yesterday afternoon. In my neighborhood, there was a lot of rain, but it came and went quickly. The sun was actually coming out when my husband called, wanting to know if we were okay.
I told him, yes, we’d had a little rain, but nothing terrible. He didn’t seem to believe me so I told him again, yup, just some heavy rain.
That was when he told me that in his office in downtown DC, he couldn’t see across the street (and the Smithsonian museum across the street is hard to miss) for the wind, the rain, and the marble-sized hail. That must have been the same storm that took out Zorak and the OO’s car.
I need to run some errands this afternoon, and then plan to lie low as we get a taste of Bonnie. I’ve added intentions for those in the paths of the two hurricanes to the Assumption Novena.

  1. The worst thing that happened to us is our power was out for almost three hours and now I can’t eat the roast beef (mmm, iron) that was in the fridge waiting to be cooked. Big strong hubby is free to take his chances with the roast (which he cooked last night) but I don’t think Davey or Baby #2 should be subjected to what most sources (including the Red Cross) say should be discarded.
The rain was intense but over quickly here, too. My mother’s all the way up in NYC and I’d ended a phone call with her when she told me there was a storm outside. Then ours started to my surprise. She called back when hers was over, a while after ours was. But she didn’t have an extended blackout like that.

  2. Yes, it was. One major gust was easily above 60 mph, which I think tore up the trees around here in one simultaneous act of chaos. After that, it was just hail and 30-40mph winds. In thirty minutes, it was gone, and the sun was shining like nothing happened, except for the leaves and timber everywhere, and about 1″ of standing water.
