The Seven Capitals Channel

I was planning to blog this as part of a follow up to my pity-party-post, but the Curt Jester beat me to it in The Seven Deadly Gilligans. The idea is that each of the castaways exemplifies one of the Seven Capital Sins: Gilligan shows us gluttony; Ginger, lust; the Skipper, anger; the Howells, avarice and sloth; Mary Ann, envy; and the Professor, pride. (This is the way I heard the list; Jeff’s differs slightly.)
Now for all you young ‘uns who don’t know our seven stranded castaways, Don DeMarco suggests you think of the folks from the place where everybody knows your name: Sam showed us lust; Norm fell to gluttony; Cliff stood for pride, Carla for anger, Rebecca for avarice. DeMarco suggests Frasier for envy, but doesn’t name anyone for sloth. Any nominees?
I have also heard that the show about nothing is really about the Seven Capitals. I have seen exactly two episodes of Seinfeld all the way through, so I hope I can remember this: Newman is gluttony, Jerry’s parents are anger and avarice, Elaine is lust, George is envy, Kramer is pride, and Jerry exemplifies sloth.
This is fun! Any nominations for Star Trek?

  1. Let’s see:
Pride/Spock: “My logic makes me superior to these emotional humans.”
Lust/Kirk: he seems always to be getting the girl (many years ago, at college, we called it the Kirk Lechery Factor).
    Anger/McCoy: “I’m a doctor, d-mm-t!”
    Avarice/Scotty: obsessed with material things.
Envy/Chekhov: there are, I think, at least two episodes where he claims that something was invented in Russia that really wasn’t.
Sloth: the unnamed enlisted person who beams down with the principals and does nothing except get killed.
Gluttony??? (possibly Nurse Chapel is driven by her unrequited passion for Spock to binging/purging?).
If we’re not limited to regulars, of course, Harry Mudd scores a seven-strike.

  2. The Seven Von Trapp Children as the Seven Deadly Sins
    1. Liesl- Lust (the obvious one !)
    2. Frederick- Pride (“I’m Frederick, and I’m impossible.” )
    3. Louisa- Anger (because she becomes angry several times)
    4. Kurt- Gluttony (“I’m Kurt. I’m hungry.” )
    5. Birgitta- Sloth ( If I remember correctly, it takes a bit to get her out of bed…)
    6. Marta- Greed ( She really wants that pink parasol. A lot. )
    7. Greta- Envy ( because she can’t do things because she’s too young- and resents it volubly)
This list is courtesy of a priest I once knew…

  3. I’d say that perhaps Cliff for sloth, and Lilith for pride? But then again, Diane was rather prideful herself. It’s a toss-up!

  4. For Cheers, I’d pick Norm for both gluttony and sloth, but if he can only have gluttony, weren’t there a couple of nameless barflies who were always there who could qualify for sloth?
Now for the cast of Friends — oh, wait, that’s too easy. All of them show us all seven sins by turns.

  5. The Bradys?
1)Marcia – Pride. Remember when she got hit in the nose and got all bent of shape over it?
2)Greg – gluttony, he could chow.
    3)Cindy -sloth
    4)Peter -greed?
    5)Bobby -anger
6)Jan – envy (Marcia, Marcia, Marcia!)
7)Alice – lust (she was hot for Sam the Butcher)
Okay, so it just doesn’t really fit with the Brady kids. They were just too darn good.

  6. Next Gen:
Pride – Picard (or the Klingons)
Lust – Riker (or Lwaxana Troi)
    Anger – Worf
    Greed – the Ferenghi
Envy – Data (wants to be human)
Got nothing for sloth and gluttony

  7. RE: the Cheers cast, I would say
    Lust – Sam (obviously)
    Anger – Carla
    Pride – Frasier
Greed – Rebecca (always after rich men)
    Sloth – Norm
    Gluttony – toss up
Envy – Woody (for a while there was a thing with him and that French guy who was trying to steal Kelly)

  8. Xander-lust
    Faith-envy
    Angel-anger
Buffy-sloth at times (I don’t want to be a slayer, I want to go on a date with Owen)
    Anya or Cordelia-greed
Willow-pride (she had that gay pride thing going on)
    have to think some more
