Why does every TV show lately have to have a public service announcement about abortion, euthenasia or whatever?
ER lately, just about every week is about someone who has the right to die.Last week (or maybe the week before) it was about how evil Bush is to stop federal funding on embryonic stem cell research. Tonight CSI was abou how distasteful it is to adopt frozen embryos. I mean, I don’t even have the energy to get into the logistics about how I disagree with the issues as much, but let’s start from the beginning: isn’t it bad form to consistently put forth “extreme” opinions on such heated issues all the time?
I get tired of everything being so loaded. I guess they are only extreme if they are pro-life…

Add to it Boston Legal this week, who had a plotline of a girl suing a Catholic hospital because they wouldn’t dispense the morning-after pill to her after a rape. (Though they gave lip-service to the choice the woman had to go to another hospital–which she didn’t take. Candace Bergen’s character then muses about “This is how they start taking our rights away…..”)
And a rerun of Law and Order, portraying a Crisis Pregnancy Center that routinely lied to its patients, delaying the abortion ’til it was past the limit the abortion could be performed, leading a young girl and her boyfriend to beat her stomach ’til she miscarried.
Lip service is given to the “other side” but there is never an entire positive storyline given to prolifers. They are all portrayed as “too tightly wound fanatics” just waiting to explode and wreak havoc.
Bleah.
Also Battlestar Galactica on Friday. The story started with a young girl stowing away to reach the only Dr performing abortions. Once she was discovered she reacted with terror at the thought of being returned to her parents who opposed abortion. The president got involved and speechified about her lifelong fight for the rights of women to control their bodies. In spite of this, she did outlaw abortion because in the story, the human race is facing extinction. Ultimately though, she was deceived by another politician who presented himself as prolife only to gain political advantage. ALL the prolifers were portrayed as vicious, hateful, backward and “religious.” I like the series but was thoroughly disappointed and disgusted with this episode.
