I feel bad for the guy. I think if he were not the great producer of the controversial and non-politically correct Passion of the Christ, this would be a blurb instead of big news. Were it Eminem, no one would care less.
Why do I think that? Well for one, the article I linked to stated:
In a column Monday on the HuffingtonPost.com, Emanuel wrote that he wished Gibson well in battling alcoholism. “But alcoholism does not excuse racism and anti-Semitism,” he wrote.
Emanuel, whose clients have included Larry David and Mark Wahlberg, went onto urge his Hollywood brethren not to work with the A-lister.
I not going to even touch on Larry David because there is very little he says or does that is not offensive, but Mark Wahlberg? I seem to remember back in the day when Mr. Wahlberg was known as “Markie Mark” he was not the role model for tolerance either.
You have a point.. although I have to admit I find it suspicious that when he is drunk and his guards fall the first thing he does is rant about the jews. I doubt if i was deliriously drunk this would ever occur to me, ykwim? I’d rant about something but certainly not about the jews. It kinda makes me think he has that stuff in his head but it’s usually censored…
Oh I agree. I don’t think he is exactly “innocent” in his feelings. To me that’s Hollywood. His Father, Hutton Gibson, is an odd Trad who has been known to say some strange anti-semitic things, so if that is the household he grew up in, I don’t doubt it. As much as I loved The Passion, Hollywood life is on such another plain of existence, I rarely hold much of what they do up to normal person scrutiny. However, I think the media is playing it up is show “see, we told you that Passion movie was anti-semitic, now this proves it!” which is sad because the movie itself really wasn’t.
Lord knows, when I get drunk, I rant about “how come I am the only one in the house that does everything around here all by myself!” That is probably what is on my mind in normal sober times.
Well, I was very upset about everything in this particular case–Mel’s words, the media coverage…everything. I do think that it is very likely that Mel struggles with some sort of “isms” (Eek, just thinking of his words to that female cop as well!) and that while he’s sober and rational he may be better able to keep himself in check. Even Mel has said that he’s in a “process of understanding where those vicious words came from.” It’s just sad all around. I do think that it’s unfortunate that this whole debacle has further fueled the argument that The Passion was anti-Semitic and that it is colored by this ideology. Sigh.
Last I heard, a Los Angeles Rabbi has asked Mel to speak at his temple on Yom Kippur, which is the Jewish day of atonement. I think that’s the first positive thing I’ve heard (other than Mel’s statements following the incident) since this story came out.

Pansy, I don’t even have to be drunk to rant about that.
Lol, I second what Coucoumelle said!
