{"id":1299,"date":"2004-06-01T14:03:35","date_gmt":"2004-06-01T19:03:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/moss-place.stblogs.org\/?p=1299"},"modified":"2004-06-01T14:03:35","modified_gmt":"2004-06-01T19:03:35","slug":"ember-days","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/moss-place.stblogs.org\/index.php\/2004\/06\/ember-days\/","title":{"rendered":"Ember Days"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday of this week are Ember Days.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newadvent.org\/cathen\/05399b.htm\">The Catholic Encyclopedia <\/a>tells us that Ember Days were given to us by the Church to &#8220;thank God for the gifts of nature, to teach men to make use of them in moderation, and to assist the needy.&#8221;  They were <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wf-f.org\/FastandAbstinence.html\">days of fast and abstinence.<\/a><br \/>\nKaren Marie has <a href=\"http:\/\/kmknapp.blogspot.com\/2004\/05\/remember-ember-days.html\">a reflection up on the Ember Days<\/a> that reminded me of this passage, attacking the books that so breezily dismiss idealism and spiritual values, from C.S. Lewis&#8217;s <i>Abolition of Man<\/i>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It will be seen that comfort and security, as known to a suburban street in peace-time, are the ultimate values: those things which can alone produce or spiritualize comfort and security are mocked.
