My husband called by mother-ilaw to tell her we are expecting, and she yelled at him “One of you two needs to get fixed!” and hung up on him.
Update:My father told us yesterday he is “absolutely thrilled!”

When’s the woman’s birthday?
Have all the little Mosses send her fun homemade birthday cards, or even make a tape of them doing funny things!
Even if she isn’t actually touched, she may chafe with a little guilt…
Oh, KTC, you are so much nicer than I am! I would have yelled back “WE AIN’T BROKEN!!!”
And that wouldn’t have helped at all.
That’s why you are the Carmelite, and I am just rude! 🙂
Pansy…oh, man…I am really, really sorry. What a vile thing for her to say.
I don’t have any snappy comebacks, sorry. But I’ll pray for your mother-in-law.

Dang Pansy!Thats horrible!
Well, regardless of what your Momma may think, God has blessed you, and thats all that really matters, right?
My Mom did basically the same thing to my sister, but she had just found out she has cancer and my Grandmother was dying and funeral plans were being made,so she had a little bit of an excuse…not much mind you, but a little bit.
I’m so sorry about that. But on an up note, congratulations to you!
Not to criticize someone with cancer and a dying mother for her “off” reaction, but when Davey was born, my aunt (and godmother) had just died three days earlier, and we got lots of cards and presents from some of her 7 living children, most of whom are much older and don’t know me all that well… having a new baby in the extended family made them feel hopeful, which was pretty touching.
BTW, do you mind my asking whether MIL is usually “like that” or has this anti-large-family mentality taken such hold in society that even normally polite people feel free to unleash such sentiments?
oh boy i didn’t see that until now. wow, that’s nice to say to your own son. i’m sorry. she might change her mind, who knows.
Ouch. That must have really, really hurt.
My dad often says that if I have a big family, he’ll be broke cause Mom will spend all the money on things for the grandkids, but he’s teasing.
My MIL asked my DH whether he were sure we wanted another, after he told her I was expecting #2 (and she’s a Catholic!) It seems to me that she doesn’t want us to have a big family, but she’s never said anything that downright hurtful. She is just a bit thoughtless.
I’ll be praying for your MIL. It is amazing the things parents can say. I tried to tell a joke to my mom;
Q – What do you call a couple who practices NFP?
A – Parents!
But, before I could get to the punchline she said “Stupid”. Didn’t get an apology from her either after I pointed out that she just called her daughter stupid. This from a woman who had 5 kids!
Congratulations to you, and try not to worry about silly in-laws. She’ll come around once the baby is born. Grandmothers, even the rudest of them, are funny that way.
Tell her somebody’s gonna have to pay for her social security — at least you’re producing a new little worker to contribute to that Ponzi scheme!
God bless you for being open to life!
D’s M,
Yes, MIL is usually “difficult” in most things
The unkindest cuts come not from our enemies but our friends, not from strangers but from family.
A friend of mine once confided that his mother told him that ever year on his birthday she gives a donation to Planned Parenthood.
What purpose could such hateful comments serve but to hurt? Please God, perhaps, to make us saints?
My congratulations to you and your husband! Our prayers for the little one!
A father of four, praying for a fifth,
Earl
PS-Actually, we had five children, but little Mary Joseph, 11 weeks, died before birth. When you lose a life you do not scoff at new life.
Congratulations, Pansy! And just offer up the sting of your MIL’s awful comment for her repentance. One of these days I’m sure she’ll be glad to have so many grandchildren! 🙂
