Well I have an appointment on Saturday morning to get my hair cut. My hair is currently very long-down to my thighs. I am tired of it. I let it grow this long because it is very thick and curly and has not held a style in the past, so I figured I would go with the “exotic” look. Also, it grows very slowly, so it was something of a great feat getting it this length. Now there is a place called Ouidad that specialises in curly hair, so maybe, just maybe I can have a real hair style.
I am debating cutting into like a chin length bob or just cutting like half of it off and leaving it long. I think I want it short. Any thoughts?

I think you should give your beautiful hair to locks of love.

What Jen said. One of the conditions my dad gave Matt when he asked if he could ask me to marry him was that he had to cut his hair for the wedding. When he got it cut he donated it to locks of love. I bet they could make at least two ponytails out of your hair… it’d be a wonderful gift to a child with cancer.
As I wear my hair in a spike cut I think short is the way to go … so easy, no hairdryer, and the spike look is exotic in its own way if it is done right.
Honestly, it’s hard for me to imagine you having short hair. It’s been long as long as I can remember…more or less. So, while cutting it short may be a new venture…I don’t know. As I’ve realized from my girlfriend, it’s not a good idea for me to advise women on hair.
Cut it half off. If you cut it really short and you *hate* it, it’s going to take a Really.Long.Time to grow back. Short hair is nice (and quick, and easy), but personally I like it just long enough to pull it up into a ponytail. Good luck on your decision!
I like short hair. I HAVE short hair. But I’d advise doing what the Smock did. She had long hair (long enough to donate to Locks of Love). She got it cut in a shoulder length bob, which is very becoming.
Then, after a few weeks, if you decide you want to go shorter, you can always get another cut. If you cut it too short the first time, it’s pretty hard to glue it back on! 🙂
That said, when I first cut my hair, I went straight from all the way down my back to pixie short. I had to call PapaC (I was picking him up from work) and tell him: “Better look for the car, ’cause you won’t recognize me!”
So I didn’t take my own advice!
Before you go off to give your hair to Locks of Love, read this article: There are enough concerns among people who care about their long hair about this organization, some of which include the fact that they sell a lot of their donated hair, and they do not comply with regulations to be considered a true 501-3(c) charity. Many of us who have donated now regret cutting and giving our hair to them.

Also, if you really want to know how to handle your curly long hair, go to this website:

These folks know their stuff, and there are many many curly haired folks who will have lots of good ideas to share….
Good luck!
I have curly hair, too. I was told I couldn’t donate it to Locks of Love because they need two or three donations to make one wig, and it’s too hard to match curly hair for a wig. Maybe if you had double the length, they could do it though. My hair wasn’t as long as yours is.
Regardless, though, I agree with doing it in steps. You can go to the middle of your back or just below your shoulders for the first cut, just to get used to it. I went from lower back to a chin-length bob when Zooey was a baby, and it felt really, really weird. My hair had been long for 25 years, and I had a lot of second thoughts! I grew it out again, but I’ve since gone back to shoulder length or shorter hair.
Last January, I had my hair cut so it was longer in the front, framing my face, but went shorter in the back. It was GREAT for my curls and actually looked fashionable. A good stylist who really KNOWS curly hair ought to be able to help you settle on a style that will make the most of your curls AND your facial features.
Dani, you know what I think but I have to reaffirm: CUT IT SHORT. Why? Because you itch to do it. Because you’re ready. Because you have an idea of what you want.
I did the step-by-step cutting a few years ago when I was contemplating cutting my long hair short after having it long since toddlerhood. I ended up leaving the salon always a little disappointed. Because my hair was not as short as I really wanted it.
Hair grows back. You want it short. Cut it.
I too have loooong curly hair and have been debating the same thing as of late. When you do get it cut, if you don’t mind, e-mail me a pic of the new do, because right now the only thing I can come up with for my own hair is to have the stylist cut it like Oprah Winfrey’s hair.
“specialises in curly hair” means “charges way too much for a haircut.” It nearly physically pains me to spend double digits for a haircut. Chong’s in San Francisco cuts hair for $7. Men and women. Does a great job. Of course if you saw my hair you might think, “AAACKK! I’ll pay anything to not look like that,” but I think Chong does a great job. Nice guy, too.
I cycle between really long hair and really short hair. ABout every ten years I get really sick of having long hair and I cut it all off. I’m starting to get itchy fingers to cut is again – but in my case long hair is so much easier to maintain. All I do is braid it when I get out of the shower and then I’m good to go. Short hair requires me to gel or mousse and then blow dry it or it looks way too tousled.
Have you had short hair before? I like the two-step idea.
Just don’t end up looking as 80s as you did in those pictures of you from around 1984 when you had short hair. When I come home for summer break, you can’t wear the “Dani D” belt buckle thing.
so… where are the photos?! the hair, where is it? where is the new dani! PROVIDE PHOTOS!!!
Just FYI – Locks of Love does NOT make wigs for kids with cancer. They make them for kids with long-term medical loss of hair from conditions such as alopecia areata. They only use a small amount of the hair donated, the rest is sold off to cover manufacturing costs. So you’d be better off keeping your long hair, and just sending a cash donation to LOLove since chances are they won’t use your hair anyway – your sacrifice would be in vain.
Ditto to the suggestion to visit the Longhair Community. You’ll get lots of inspiration and may just decide to keep your hair long.
