Oh Don’t Do That

On Sundays when I work at the diner, my boss plays the top 40 country countdown. I don’t get country music. I appreciate the talent involved, and the sentiments expressed in the songs, but it doesn’t really do anything for me.
What I do find interesting is the number of songs that I know that have been either remade, or made first as country songs. There is “I’ll Always Love You” sung by Dolly Parton. There is a group that sings a BoyzIIMen hit “I’ll Make Love to You”. Yesterday I also heard Dolly Parton singing John Lennon’s “Imagine” and it sounded a bit better that the original.
But there was no excuse for what I heard next. Faith Hill singing Janis Joplin’s “Piece of My Heart”. My boss told me she released that in the early 90’s which shows how much I knoew about country music. But oh no, you don’t remake Janis Joplin. You don’t turn classic hard rock hits into country. I wanted to ask “hasn’t anyone who was in on this adaption even heard the original?” I almost threw something at the radio. Aye yiy yiy.

  1. Here I go again with another American Idol moment. lol Can you stand to hear another one?
Last season, Carrie Underwood sang “Piece of My Heart” and the judges ripped into her, saying that it sounded nothing at all like Janis’ version. And of course it didn’t. She was actually singing the Faith Hill version, but the judges didn’t catch that. That said, I agreed with them. I just didn’t care for that version at all, and I really do like Faith Hill.
I like some country music, especially all of the oldies. There are some new songs that are nice, like ahem, Carrie Underwood’s “Jesus, Take the Wheel” (this one makes me BAWL), and [cough] Josh Gracin’s “I Want to Live.” lol Do you see a theme here? If you’re feeling adventurous, and want to give them a listen, go to videocodezone dot com and search under the artist names. Love that site.

  2. Actually, I like Faith Hill as well, but I am only familiar with her more modern cross-overy stuff, like The Way You Love Me and This Kiss. But I am not very intrigued otherwise.
I also like Carrie’s song. It has been number 1 for awhile.

  3. Wowzers, I had no idea it was number one. 🙂 I only listen via sites like the one I mention above, so I don’t know what is or isn’t successful.
I love Faith Hill’s This Kiss (very sweet) & Breathe. I don’t know many of the titles, but those two I remember.

  4. I barely listen to Country at all either, except when it is “forced” upon me, like when I was at hairdressing school, that was the only station we could have playing in the school, because the other, (in the instructor’s opinion) was too “heavy” for clients. The options were talk radio like CBC, very intellectual stuff, or classic music, so I ended up listenling to country quite a bit…

  5. I think Dolly did the song first ages ago, then Whitney covered it for The Bodyguard. Everyone seems to be doing remakes, songs, movies, shows…. 🙂

  6. Can’t stand Faith Hill, but to be fair…
Janis Joplin covered one of those great standards of Roger Miller, and if you don’t cover Janis, you DEFINITELY do not cover Roger Miller.
    The song? Kristoferson’s “Bobby McGhee”.
