Peony Moss: March 2006 Archives

...a disabled woman died because her husband wouldn't feed her and didn't think anyone else should feed her either.

The case went before a judge and the judge found the husband guilty of felony neglect and sent him to jail appointed a guardian for the disabled woman ordered the police to arrest anyone who as much as tried to moisten the woman's lips with water.

Meanwhile, women's advocacy groups such as NOW demanded to know why a man who was shacking up with another woman and stood to inherit a pile of money when his wife died was permitted to be the disabled woman's guardian demanded an investigation into past allegations of abuse and neglect had nothing to say.

The mainstream media did serious investigative journalism into the disabled woman's original injuries publicized interviews with nurses who'd cared for the disabled woman in the past demonstrated their concern for the rights of the disabled by publicizing the serious concerns that the disability community had about this case did a profile on George Felos that included his claims to be able to psychically communicate with brain-damaged patients repeated whatever the husband's lawyer told them.

The doctor who was ordered to remove the feeding tube told the husband to go to hell did it.

One year ago, a woman who had committed no crime and was tried by no jury was ordered by a judge to be starved to death. And one year ago today, she died.

Guinness

(100% dark & bitter, 66% working class, 100% genuine)

Okay, we all know Guinness is the best possible score on any "What Kind Of Beer Are You" test, so you can just go on and pat yourself on the back now. Like the world's most famous brew, you're genuine, you've got good taste, and you're sophisticated. What else can I say, except congratulations?

If your friends didn't score the same way, get ready for them to say: Guinness is too heavy; it's an acquired taste; it's too serious--and they probably think those things about you at times. But just brush 'em off. Everybody knows Guinness is the best. Cheers.

more paint

More painting this weekend, this time in the powder room. When we first moved into the PGMP, the powder room was decorated with hideous wallpaper; we took off the wallpaper but couldn't get the glue off, so even after we repainted, the wall had all kinds of weird dribbles and bumps of ancient glue.

So I decided to try some textured paint to hide the glue dribbles and went with Behr Bellagio Faux (it seemed the easiest.) And it was easy. We're very pleased with the result, and I'm already dreaming about accent walls for the new place in a similar technique for if we pull this move off.

If you try this yourself, use plenty of masking tape and paper on the floor -- the glaze is very, very runny. I'll post a picture once I get the bathroom put back together. We used a yellow glaze over a pinky-beige undercoat and I think it looks nice, especially with the towel bar we already had.

...is that when you get white paint in your hair it isn't as noticeable.

Or so I would like to think. After much going back-and-forth, the Maryland Mosses have decided to try to move to Northern Virginia (Diocese of Arlington motto: "More Catholics than AveMariaville, and no alligators!")

So like the Prices, we're using our tax return to tart up the ol' Prussian Green Money Pit. Right now that means paint, paint, and more paint. Then the mother of all spring cleanings and then... we'll see what happens.

Meanwhile we're mulling over the cost-benefit analysis: cheaper house in good condition with smaller mortgage, or more expensive house in need of fixing-upping in a better neighborhood?

I hate you.

I hate that your camera, given to me as a birthday gift last May, has broken twice now. I mean, it's great that it's still under warranty and all, but do you think I enjoy having to pay to ship it there and back to you? Again? A total of a month and a half in the shop in the first ten months I've owned it? If I didn't want to be able to use the camera, I wouldn't own one. You know?
