Memorial Day

O beautiful for heroes proved
in liberating strife,
who more than self their country loved,
and mercy more than life!
America! America!
God mend thine every flaw,
confirm thy soul in self-control,
thy liberty in law.

O beautiful for patriot dream
that sees beyond the years
thine alabaster cities gleam,
undimmed by human tears!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee,
and crown thy good with brotherhood
from sea to shining sea.

Prayer request 911

Please pray for John D., the brother-in-law of a good friend. John survived cancer a few years ago, but the chemotherapy damaged his heart, so when he had a heart attack a few weeks ago, the damage was devastating. His doctors have been trying to help him recover to the point where a heart transplant would be an option.

John was just beginning to turn the corner when he developed sepsis today. His prognosis is grave, and his family is begging for prayers. John is a husband and father; his youngest just graduated from high school.

Thanks in advance.

UPDATE: May 24, 10:00 AM John passed into eternal life yesterday evening (probably around the time I wrote the entry.) He'd received the sacraments and had his wife and children present. Eternal rest grant him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine on him.

How did I miss that the Smock is moving? I thought our family was moving quickly, but she and the Smockhub put an offer on a house just earlier this month and are closing this week!

So now I simply cannot complain about anything. Prayers to St Joseph for them!

So who else in St Blog's is moving this summer?

Here!

(and don't worry, it's Mr Darcy and Miss Bennet as played by Mr Firth and Ms Ehle.)

Swanson's Unwritten Rules

| | Comments (0)

Came across this through the wonderful Waiter Rant blog: CEOs say how you treat a waiter can predict a lot about character.

Bill Swanson, the CEO of Raytheon, lists this as rule 32 in his Unwritten Rules of Management (a list of maxims) and adds, "This rule never fails."

Makes sense to me. Isn't this rule demonstrated time and again in the Bible? (the ruthless debtor, Dives and Lazarus....)

I'm posting the entire list in the Extended Entry. #10 was a lesson that I should have learned much earlier in my professional life. #8 was a lesson I learned early. And I would quibble with #29 -- I think it would be possible if the object in question is made of leather and doesn't have a lot of seams.
