I want to eat liver and other weird preggo stuff

| | Comments (9)

Gross, huh? but I have spent the day daydreaming about chowing down on a nice hunk of liver with onions. Pregnancy is weirdness.

As a child I used to relish liver. I was also extremely anemic, so my father used to chop it up and put it in the gravy. I can eat that again.

I look ridiculous. I am like 9 weeks today and can only fit in maternity clothes-which would make me like 5 month looking by the normal standards. I read it is due to poor stomach muscles. Grrr.

For my wife it was Swenson's Rainbos Sherbet. She couldn't eat anything else. Ah, the good ol' days.

oooh i want liver! i'm not even pregnant (that I know of) but liver.. mmmmh. i think i'm hungry.;)

I just can't stand the idea of eating the organ that filters and stores poison. Then again, I've never been pregnant.

BTW - interesting fact. Polar Bear livers contain so much Vitamin A, that if you eat one you'll die from hypervitaminosis (sp?).

Liver does not now (18 1/2 weeks) sound and has never sounded good to me.

Pregnant women are supposed to be cautious about Vitamin A intake because excessive amounts have been linked to birth defects -- and not a huge excess. I am not sure what the current "recommendations" are for liver. I believe beta carotene is safer than the kind used in supplements, but I don't know much about what Vitamin A's in what food, and really, do a web search or maybe ask Alicia or your own midwife if this alarms you, as I am not a nutritionist, midwife, or doctor :)

Do not worry, I am in no danger of eating liver because I do not think I am up to handling it. I can barely handle raw chicken breasts at this stage.

Besides that was yesterday's craving. Now it's graham crackers dipped in chocolate covered in rainbow sprinkles.

That is interesting about polar bears, again, no danger of eating that anytime soon. ;)

Mmm... awfully unLenten, but today's craving works for me tooo...

At 22 weeks, I crave what I always crave while pregnant.... fruit, especially strawberries. I ate so much of them last time I was expecting, I broke out in spots. And I live in Canada's Arctic, so strawberries aren't cheap. About 11 bucks for half a quart.

Here is my recipe for Polar Bear ragu:

1 pound of ground polar bear.

No, just kidding. I have not yet eaten bear, and fellow game aficionados warn me that it is not the best meat around. However, I was thumbing through Ted Nugent's Kill it and Grill it the other day, and he has some bear recipes. I will try it someday, but no rush.

I do recommend wild boar liver, for my friends who eat liver. Yum. You wrap it in caul and season it with fennel seeds, salt and pepper. How I can't wait for Easter, you have no idea.

liver is safe in moderation, once or twice a week. I suggest organically raised young animals for the source - chicken, calf, etc.
when I was pregnant, I craved seafood - expensive seafood. lobster, crab, shrimp, mussels, and so on. The weirdest pregnancy cravings I ever had were with baby #2, where I craved 7-11 slurpees and Taco Bell burrito supremes. I resisted that one to the max! (well, at least the slurpees).
