We went to see the new X-Men movie today. Well, more so than the other two, it was this X-Men Geeks dream. I mean, there were some characters killed off that should not have been(and some I were glad they finally killed off). I'd like to say who, but it would be a spoiler. But there were some scenes taken from issues I remember from back in the '81 that were classic scenes. I mean you have to cut them some slack for trying to compact 25 years of issues into two hours.
I didn't like Famke Jensen as Jean Grey/Phoenix-she was useless playing an Omega-Level mutant who spent most of her time staring into space and crunchy looking. There were a couple of good Storm moments, Kitty Pryde moments, and Wolverine moments. Beast was cool too.
There was storyline that sort alluded to the misguided conservative attitude towards homosexuality. The "right" side develops a cure drug for mutants, and there is a political clash because "there is nothing wrong with mutants, and they don't need to be cured". I could be reading into it, but I remember the same speeches in the comic with Polaris standing on the steps of the capitol building saying "no one should be discrimnated against for being a mutant, homosexual, or different race..." Gag. I started to lose interest in X-Men around then because it was kind of boring. Who wants to hear super heroes whine about politics? Get back to fighting Sleazoids!
Anyway, I thought the message of "it's natural, and doesn't need a cure" made me think of contraception. Is fertility something that needs to be cured? Sorry, you will hear me rant about this a lot as I hear more and more comments about number 6.

Hey Paul wants to know why it's rated PG 13... is it just for violence or is there s*xual content/inuendo? He's wondering if it would be ok for an 11 yr old to watch. Screenit.com will have the details up soon but also nice to hear someone's opinion. BTW, he agrees re: the homo stuff. He saw bits and pieces in a clip today, but hasn't seen the movie yet.
I think it depends on your 11 year old. It is a lot less violent than let's say, Lord of The Rings as far as graphics, but they do kill off a lot of people. The Pheonix character vaporizes a lot of people, including the professor.
There is also one scene too, where Jean (or her alter ego, The Phoenix) gets all hot and bothered and tries to seduce Wolverine which made me a bit uncomfortable and made me tell them close their eyes. No nudity or anything...just a bit too long.
Is Paul an X-Man geek too?
I'm just tired of feeling like I'm watching a soap opera when I'm watching comic book movies, tihs one is the worst for that yet. I should not be crying at action flicks!
Well comic books are very similar to soap operas, just with super powers.

Yes, Paul's an X-Men geek, LOL. And a Smallville geek, and a Buffy geek, and a (who is that guy who came from Buffy and got his own show?) geek. Paul had a HUGE comic book collection that, once they all started going homo, liberal, etc., he sold on ebay (when ebay first started). Me? I really can't stand any of those shows. LOL
Oops, Paul wanted to me to make a slight correction/clarification lest anyone think less of him... he wanted me to make sure you knew he ONLY collected DC comics, not Marvel.
Well Karen, that is a big discrepancy. FWIW, I never read DC, I was a die hard Marvel reader! ;)
