Peony's Parenting Tip #4

If your five-year-old comes upstairs and says, "Mommy, there's smoke coming out of the computer," do not waste a minute trying to decide if he's crying wolf.

Did this actually happen??

Yes it did! At first I did think he was crying wolf, but he insisted so I went downstairs to check. He pointed to the lamp by the computer and said it had come on by itself. It was on; I thought I'd remembered turning it off.

So I went to switch it off and it started making strange noises -- and emitting a little plume of smoke. I unplugged it and got it outside right away.

Thank you guardian angels for making sure we were home when this happened (so it didn't start a fire) and keeping Hambet safe!

Thank goodness it was fixable.

Yikes!

Yeah, that's a tough line. I guess I've distinguished between responding to their feelings and responding to what their senses are telling them. Still far from infallible, even so.

Glad it turned out for the best.

With a Fastolph (or to be more exact, an ADHD kid in the house, you can't blow off these things). Everytime I hear "oh no!" my heart stops.

Later, I find evidence that we do indeed have guardian angels, like burn marks in my daughter's pillow cases, like a smell of natural gas to find he turned the gas on on the stove without managing to turn the burner on, and other near-death misses.
