I need some casual shoes this summer. They need to be "real" shoes -- arch support, plenty of padding, comfortable for a day of walking -- that go with summery clothes.

Usually I'd for go for the Keds but apparently that is a fashion faux pas. So: advice needed.

Eight facts about Peony

| | Comments (0)

I've been tagged by Mama T!

Here are the rules: Each player lists 8 facts/habits about themselves. The rules of the game are posted at the beginning before those facts/habits are listed. At the end of the post, the player then tags 8 people and posts their names, then goes to their blogs and leaves them a comment, letting them know that they have been tagged and asking them to read your blog.

1. The outfit I bought last weekend is the first (non-khaki) brown clothing I've owned in at least 15 years.

2. I have a bad habit of forgetting to water plants. I start off with great intentions but then I get distracted and....

3. I have been bitten by the photography bug and am saving up for a new camera.

4. I love coffee.

5. I have been working part-time at a long-term temp job since January, and might go on staff if they can keep up with the flexible hours and let me work just one day a week over the summer.

6. I have pre-ordered a copy of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

7. I have a secret cache of Hershey's Kisses.

8. I am going to break the rules of this meme and not tag eight people.

9. I'm on the same wavelength as MamaT concerning housework: don't like the cleaning part, do like the clean house part, trying to work on my attitude, tapping ideas from Flylady. At this moment I am almost completely caught up with the laundry. Yay!

10. I have just started listening to podcasts in the past couple of weeks.

Pansy, you're up! And anyone else who wants to play, consider yourself tagged.

Two small delights

Regina Doman has an entry up about cake stands. I love cakes. I love baking them, I love eating them, and I love displaying them on the cake stand I inherited from my grandmother. And just reading that short entry about cake stands makes me want to drop what I'm doing and make a white cake with lemon filling and coconut seven-minute frosting. And when it was done, I would put it on my cake stand, take a picture, brew some coffee, get out the china, and yummmm.

Regina also mentions that Victoria magazine is coming back this fall. Sweet articles about gracious living, recipes, and lots and lots and lots of pretty pictures. It helped me keep my sanity while I was in school, and I still have my clip file of some of my favorite articles (including the one that introduced me to commonplace books) and pictures. It ceased publication in 2003 and I've missed it, so I'm really happy to see that it's coming back again.

stupid spammers

Evildoers make life so inconvenient, don't they? First we had to take off our shoes. Then we had to start producing IDs to buy the good over-the-counter decongestant.

And now it's the comments policy. Pansy and I are sick of those dirty parasitic spammers, so until we can make other arrangements I'm going to have to turn the filter up to 11, which is going to cause a lot of comments to be held until we can approve them.

So if you comment and it doesn't show up right away, don't fret. It will.

If you look carefully, you can see my Fredegar, on of the younglings, has held his own against the Sith...

Italian cheesecake again

This recipe is from my Aunt Gertie via my Aunt Tina. Aunt Gertie is my grandfather's sister. His family hails from the Bari region of Italy where this recipe originated.

This recipe can be halved, and frankly, I cannot see anyone reason why anyone would make the original version. I halved it and used a 9 inch springform pan.

Ingredients:

1 dozen eggs (room temperature)
1 cup of sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla
3 pounds ricotta cheese
1 pint heavy cream

Preheat oven to 325 degrees and grease pan.

Beat eggs really well (use an electric mixer), add sugar and vanilla. Gently add ricotta; do not beat in two hard or else cake will come out liquidy. Fold in heavy cream.

Pour batter into the pan and put the pan on a baking sheet (it tends to leak out the bottom some). Bake for 1 1/2 hours and turn the oven off. Leave in the oven for two hours.

The consistency will be pretty soft, although it holds it shape to come out of the pan nicely. You can serve as it is or sprinkle a bit of cinnamon on top or even some fruit.
