I Hang My Head Down In Shame

My ghetto three year old calls his sister "Shorty."

I know because I heard my daughter in the other room saying "Stop calling me Shawdee!"

Not too much color, but just enough. The lip balm aspect is great!

Coach Carter

*Typed while nursing*

Ah, why do I homeschool, let me count the ways. Or you can go see this movie and I won't have to bother. This movie is perfect example of how kids live up or down to what is expected of them and how at least this particular public school in the film expects less than more. My personal experience with public schools has been no more has been expected of minority students beyond being bipedal, but perhaps I should talk more about the movie than my bitter public school experience.

Coach Carter (Samuel L. Jackson) is a Joe Clark(a great man by the way who I think should be cloned and sent to every public school)esque type of man. He utilises strange tactics like discipline and a sense of self respect in how young men carry themselves to make a high school basketball team live up to their potential, and hopefully achieve college.

Now, I am not a very good movie reviewer because I never know exactly how much more of a plot I should reveal than what is in previews without spoiling the movie.

I will say I found the scenarios realistic. I do recommend this film and I would almost give it an 'A' except for one big problem I had with it that almost had me walk out. It made me feel so bad. One of the basketball players' girlfriends, played by Ashanti, is pregnant. She decides because the future is unsure and she really wants her boyfriend to go off to college instead of remaining in a dead end life in the ghetto to have an abortion. After that all is well in the world. There is one point in the movie where Coach Carter stresses the importance of star athletes not getting special treatment and having to obey the rules like everyone else. But then the girlfriend has an abortion.

Watching the games is fun and watching the transformation from thugs into young men is also fun. I also liked the soundtrack and perhaps will purchase it. So I give the movie a 'C'.

Habby Derbay!

Gorbulas is three! He is my baby and he is three already! How did this happen? His brothers made him cards out of construction paper and crayons and said "Happy Birthday Gorbulas!" to which he exclaimed "Oh, habby derbay!" He also got a nifty kid sized X-Wing fighter.

He is so cute. He still has a little squeaky voice and that wobbly walk toddlers have. My brother swears he is evil because he glares at everyone. But I'm his Mama so I can't help but to love him.

but I cannot seem to get my thoughts together. I always enjoy reading about life issues, but with such frustration because I cannot figure out for the life of me why abortion is ever legal.

When I was a teenager, I was more active in the pro-life movement and I miss the ability to participate as much. I find it very interesting though, that when I attended various marches and protests back in the day (80's), I was one of the few teenagers. It was made up mostly of middle aged people. Now besides the amount of youth, the campaign seems to be supported by a great deal of Silent no More women. This is actually making it so much more frustrating because here are women saying that it is not all it is cracked up to be as far as women's rights, yet legislature is still not listening. What's it going to take?

I wondered over to Ann Coulter today and she said just what I was thinking, except much better than I could:

Actually, what we need least of all is to "change hearts." Maybe it's my law background, but I think it's time we changed a few judges.

The "changing hearts" portion of the abortion debate is over. ATTENTION, PASSENGERS: We're now entering the "minds" portion of the "hearts and minds" journey on abortion. We've been talking about abortion for 32 years. All the hearts that can be changed have been changed. By some estimates, 35 million human hearts (and counting) have been "changed" by abortion.

Each year on the anniversary, my stomch turns a little more than the year before, I am a little less patient on this issue, a little more desperate, a little more angry and more scared about what kind of future we have in a society where mothers kill their children.

Slow Down!

Napolean Dynamite

| | Comments (13)

I meant to blog about this movie like a month ago when I first saw this, but haven't had a free arm.

Now my children, brothers, father and husband have been reciting I guess you would call them "Napolean-isms" for a month.

This movie is silly, is not about anything, has a sort of pointless plot but is a must see. OK, maybe not a must see, but if you are fan of stupid humor it is. It is about a teenager who is pretty much a geek, who lives with his grandmother. He help his best friend runs for class president. Not deep at all.

There is an interesting story about the one of the stars, Efren Ramirez:

Efren Ramirez is an upcoming rising star. A new face to filmgoers, Efren Ramirez is a bonifide scene-stealer in the quirky comedy Napoleon Dynamite (2004). Stuck between choosing between Napoleon Dynamite and the studio film "The Alamo", Efren was quick to choose Napoleon Dynamite which has grossed over $41 million at the box office to date.

I think that's funny.

So It Snowed

| | Comments (1)

and we were snowed in. This would have been pretty cool-we had munchies, it was on the weekend so Polo was snowed in with us instead of out working. But the pipes had to freeze up again for the second time this week. This time when they thawed out, our hot water stopped working. Our pipes would do just fine and not freeze if one our kids would stop turning the trickle of water off in our bathroom. So the Agway/Suburban Propane guy is coming to check on the hot water heater and we shall see what happens.

Update: There is a valve on the hot water heater that registers water pressure going through the heater to turn the heater on. It froze and broke, so the Agway guy is ordering a new one and will replace it. I am not sure exactly when that will happen, so more heating water on the stove for baths until...

We were stuck in the house without hot water and on Thursday Polo did something to his ankle. I think it is just a sprain but it is still swollen and purple and he cannot walk very well. Luckily I was finally able to get him to go get his x-rays the doctor told him to get on Friday. So he is doing that now and we shall see what happens.

Update: Polo's x-rays show no fracture, Deo Gratias, just a nasty sprain.

We were snowed in this weekend without hot water, with Polo with a bummed ankle and the kitten who broke into our house and stayed, Melody is in heat. We did fully intend to get her and Legolas fixed, but we had a baby and Christmas happened and getting their shots was pricey. We thought we had just a bit more time. Well, we didn't. We are alternating keeping either Melody or Legolas in the pet carrier to keep them apart. Even though we live in the country and I hope to get a goat and some chickens, I am still new to this animal stuff. My only other pet, Chun Li was fixed right away, so I never experienced this cat-in-heat stuff and I am amazed how retarded she is acting. So Legolas is off to the vet tonight to get fixed so we do not have to keep them caged up and we shall see what happens.

Tonight is also Rosey Posey's Hillary Duff concert. Must husband lost won the rock, paper, scissors contest and gets to take her. Rosey Posey is running around pulling out clothes and nail polish and acting like a tween-age girl. So we shall see how she likes her first concert.

Update: Rosey Posey and Polo came back at 10.30 last night. I was watching reruns of Buffy Season 6 waiting for them. She was very excited and had a great time. Polo said there was lots and lots of screaming little girls and their parents.

Elektra

| | Comments (4)

I don't know. I tried to like it because I am such a big Marvel fan, although I have never been a Daredevil fan. The few times the character Elektra bumped into the comics I did read, as a child I thought she had a really cool costume, but was not very nice or interesting.

So Elektra is an extraordinary martial artist with issues. Her mother was killed when she was a little girl, and on top of that she was killed in the Daredevil movie and either revived or brought back to life-I dunno. The movie is unclear. So to work through these issues, she becomes an assasin instead of taking Prozac. Um, yeah.

She is hired to assasinate a father and thirteen year old girl. The father is played by hunky Goran Visjnic who is pretty much useless and wimpy. Instead of assinasinating them, she decides to rpotect them. Without going in to more depth of this very boring storyline, let me just say, the little girl is your typical teenager-she steals, she acts up etc. The father is useless as a character and as a man. He always running as Elektra, Super Woman De jour protects them over and over again until it is revealed the teenage girl is also a prodigy martial artist and protects him. Typical modern day feminist trite. Then to top it all off, Elektra's sensei played by Terrance Stamp admits that he always knew she had a "pure heart" even though she was an assasin for awhile trying to find herself. What-ever.

I actually would not have cared at all about the slightly offensive story line if they just gave me more martial arts fighting scenes. I am a simple minded sucker for special effects and action. But action scenes were few and far between with lots of scenes of Elektra staring out a windown remembering her mother's death, which they never really explained. There are movies where the story is simply an "excuse" to show fun stuff. Drumline's story is merely an excuse to see some really neat badn scenes. Strictly Ballroom is an excuse to see some neat dancing. Any Jet Li movie is an excuse to see him do his thing. Anyway, Elektra didn't cut it.

Pansy Stuff and Prayer Requests

| | Comments (9)

It is the middle of the night and I have insomnia because the baby was up. He is now sleeping soundly, but I who amd dead tired, am awake. Agh, motherhood! Kids, why have 'em?

-A week ago Fredegar had a check-up. He is 15 pounds and 23 inches. He is a real chubbalumps. Nice fat cheeks and thighs. Since he was born, he loves to sleep on my chest at night, but he is sort of taking up all the room on my torso now. Just two monhs ago I barely felt he was there.
-Polo, my 9 tear old boy, is giving me a hard time with his school work. He will do any chore I ask of him, shovel the walk, bring in firewood-anything physical. But when it comes down to sitting for a lesson, he needs to go to the bathroom, get water, check on the two year old. It is starting to become a problem. Pray I nip it in the bud properly.
-I have had mastitis for the past week and am on antibiotics. I am trying to choke down as much yogurt as possible to deter thrush. It has only gotten so better though and it looks like I will have to go in and see the doctor. I so don't have time.
-I also have to go get a 2 hour glucose test done today because my ACG something like that test showed my glucose levels are still elevated. I asked the doctor if I am diabetic if pregnancy brought this on and he said I was probably becoming diabetic. Oh well, I guess I cannot live on chocolate chip bagels after all.
